I have been watching this nest since the parents began incubating eggs. Shortly after two of the three eggs were hatched, I was photographing the nest and witnessed a startling wonder. The Eagle in charge needed a break – I guess. So it flew from the nest leaving the two frail eaglets and one egg unattended. The eagle’s mate was perched on a nearby cliff. The eagle in charge began soaring at an alarming distance from the nest. Seemingly out of nowhere a flock of turkey vultures arrived circling high above the nest but descending gradually. Still, the nest seemed unguarded. I cringed at the thought of the impending demise of the eaglets and the egg. My tension was relieved when suddenly a high-pitched scream broke the silence and one of the eagles came swooping over the nest. This happened a couple of times keeping the vultures at bay. Finally one of the parents landed in the nest. With the ferocious sentinel in the nest, the vulture’s hope of a meal was gone and so they left too. The eaglets belonged. But even when they seemed alone and vulnerable, they were never out of the protective care and attention of their parents. It’s a great illustration of what it means to be near God in Jesus.
