Last spring, I spent nearly a day photographing this Common Loon family. Loon parents tote their babies (loonlets) on their backs and under their wings during the first few weeks of life. Doing so creates a family bond, protects them from predators, and provides warmth and opportunities to explore their environment safely while learning hunting and foraging skills. One of my favorite captures of the day, despite the rain and chilly temperature, the loonlet twins are comfortable and safe in the feathers of Dad’s back. Notice the large, webbed feet. In contact with Dad’s skin, the feet conduct heat from his body to their own. In my wildlife experiences, the Common Loon father is one of the most devoted species to protecting and training his young. This photo expresses the nurture, devotion, and protection I experience from my Heavenly Father.
