Description

“Pelagic Cormorant”

This mating Pelagic Cormorant spotted in Northwest Washington’s ocean coast was flying in to land on the cliffs. Walking by a very large sea stack on Ruby Beach, I observed large numbers of these cormorants flying around the sea stack and landing on the beach facing side of the cliffs. Pulling up my long telephoto lens I watched as the cormorants were plucking the grasses on the edge of the cliffs and flying around to the ocean facing side of the sea stack with clumps of grass in their bills presumably building their nests. The cormorants nest in colonies. Males find a nesting location and collect the materials to build it. During the building, the female stays at the nest guarding the fresh nesting supplies from other cormorants. Generally, Pelagic Cormorants build nests facing the ocean instead of shore for privacy and protection. The cormorants will fly up to 25 miles a day gathering food for their young and will dive up to depths of 120′ for fish and crustaceans.
