LESSONS FROM A MOUNTAIN HIKE

Roxanne’s Musings.

There are many lessons to keep in mind when you are on a mountain hike adventure! Starting is exciting. The destination is compelling. But as your first lighthearted steps give way to trudging along, weariness begins to settle in. The path seems steeper, the fog more intense, the map unclear.

But take heart – enjoy the lessons we have learned on our recent hike.

  • Giving up comes easily when you’re tired. So, be sure and have someone by your side to prod you along! A good partner is worth their weight in gold.

  • Others who are coming down the trail offer a lot of encouragement: “You’re almost there! Keep going—it’s so worth it!” The mature and experienced are invaluable supports during the journey.

Wildflowers lined the trail.

  • The journey is just as valuable to your life as arriving at the destination. Remember, most of the time is spent on the journey upward.

  • Along the hike, look around and enjoy the views. The wildflowers nod with encouraging smiles. Bubbling brooks cheer as you pass by. Waterfalls roar their reassurance. And the wildlife – the chipmunks, birds, marmots all greet you, urging you on and upward.

  • When your legs are tired and your feet start to hurt, it’s easy to start grumbling. But this is of no value to you. Grumbling just drains your energy and drags down the people around you. Put on a smile. Pull up your boot socks. Keep on walking.
  • When you reach the top and take in the views, you will experience an exhilarating sense of accomplishment. Feeling empowered, strong, and like you can conquer any other mountain that comes your way.

It felt like you could literally step onto a fluffy carpet of clouds. In the center distance is the peak of Mt. Adams, and to the right is the tip of Mt. Saint Helens.

  • When you’re done enjoying the vista and walking down the trail—back into the foggy clouds—remember all the encouragement you were given on the way up. Offer the same to those starting their upward journey. Pass along the hope that carried you.

“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” ~ Galatians 6:9-10

“…but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.
“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” ~ Philippians 3:12b and 14
